How to travel the world on a budgetShane Thomas is an expert in how to travel the world on a budget. Shane knows how to travel and live in the third world and make your money last longer.

In this episode Shane shares some of his best tips to budget travelling including how to grab the best deals on airfares.

Could you travel with only 4 changes of clothes? Travel light is one of the keys to getting great airfares. Shane travels  with between 7 to  10kgs of carry on  luggage. That’s it. No more. What do you think ladies, could you do it? It is certainly a challenge. I think it could be possible travelling in South-East Asia, in the warmer climates. Not sure if it could be managed in the colder climates.

When you are a permanent traveller and have accumulated a few friends in different countries like Shane has comes with benefits. Shane does take advantage of having bases in the Phillipines and China. This  allows Shane to leave things with friends.

Could you travel on $8K per year all in, all inclusive of accommodation, food, airfares? It makes you want to see where all your money has disappeared to? The challenge would be to be that displined with your spending habits. The beauty of travelling on a budget is the experience you have with the people and not wasting money on sightseeing tours and expensive hotels.

It is possible to stick to a budget when you hang out in the 3rd world.  Shane is a master of negotation and can get deals on monthly rentals working out to just  $5 AUD a night in some places.

Shane has included his favourite countries as:

  • China
  • Thailand
  • Cambodia
  • Vitenam
  • Indonesia (Bali)
