Tom Harrison, author, talks about the the obstacles to retirement and how to overcome them. Some unprepared retirees get to a low point when fear and desperation can turn into a great motivator. Tom outlines his finindings and key points to show you how to have a successful retirement by utilizing your time wisely.
Tom decided to retire because he had been doing the same work for about 35 years and it dawned on him he probably wasn’t going to get meaningfully better at it. The nine months between announcing his retirement and retiring gave Tom some time to start researching what Retirement would mean since he had never given it any real thought to it.
Then for about 9 months after retiring (a total of 18 months) he researched to find what others could tell him. He didn’t want to reinvent the wheel so many others had already invented so well about what to do and what to avoid to Successfully Retire.
Tom’s book Overcoming the Obstacles to Successful Retirement is about never really retiring from life. It is a major theme of the book because in essence you really can’t retire. You may do a poor job at your retired life, but done right and successfully it is a job, your new job.
The book’s subtitle Time Now to Build a New, More Exciting & Better Life is somewhat a play of words
- Now is the Time – as you are on the shorter-end of Time, it is now or probably never, you now have time (since you have 40 – 50 extra hours per week);
- It is time now to build a new, more exciting & better life!
- the theme in a word? Better
The key message throughout the book is becoming significantly better through investments of time in developing meaningful disciplines in the key areas of life.
You are no longer motivated by “have tos,” deadlines, bosses – or being the boss. You are now relying on the necessity for self-motivation to do what you know will make you better. A focus on better and the real result provides the great motivator to improve your key life areas.
